| Description | Somatostatin is a peptide hormone that regulates the release of many hormones, including insulin and glucagon. It is also involved in the regulation of blood sugar levels. Somatostatin is produced by delta cells in the pancreas and it inhibits secretion of digestive enzymes from the pancreas. The most common use for somatostatin is to reduce excessive stomach acid production. Somatostatin can be used to treat pancreatitis, steatorrhea (excessive fat in feces), or chronic pancreatitis. There are two types of somatostatin: long-acting somatostatin and short-acting somatostatin. Long-acting somatostatin has a half-life of about 12 hours; short-acting somatostatin has a half-life of about 2 hours. |
